The lyrics to Christina Aguilera’s popular song “Beautiful” have been updated to reflect modern culture. A new music video that depicts the effect of social media on young adults and their mental health has been revamped 20 years after the song first debuted on the charts.
In 2002, Aguilera’s song “Beautiful” became a worldwide smash and taught countless young admirers how to embrace themselves. The song’s lyrics read, “You are gorgeous / no matter what people say / words can’t pull you down.”
In the latest footage, teenagers can be seen staring blankly into the mirror and at their phone screens. They don’t talk to one another before being selected for cosmetic surgery.
The video concludes with the following important message: “Social media has changed how we relate to our bodies over the past 20 years, which has also had an impact on our mental health. According to research, children and teens who spend time on social networking sites are more likely to have disordered eating patterns, self-harm, and body image problems. This must be altered.”
